French authorities will start stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President asking him to support the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson states officers will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to snarl the propellers of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official left office.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
