The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic resort island located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The family released a statement saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, including a significant array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
